Welcome
to the Whaley Bridge Cricket Club website.
This
is a new project to complement our new ground and forward
vision for the club.
Records of Whaley Bridge Cricket Club go back well into
the 1800’s. It is clear from local press reports
that cricket was organised in Whaley Bridge in the 1870’s
by the Wesleyan Church and the Mechanics Institute.
A search through other websites also reveals diary entries
of a gentleman making note of the fact he was going
to play cricket at Whaley Bridge as long ago as 1865.
The ground at Horwich Park is mentioned in records as
being the home to football and cricket for Whaley Bridge
from 1883 onwards. It remained the home of Whaley Bridge
Cricket Club up until September 2005, when on Sunday
18th September 2005 the last game was played at the
ground.
New Horwich Park became our home with the commencement
of the 2006 season.
Over the years a great number of players have graced
the turf, particularly at Horwich Park. The club was
one of the founder members of the Derbyshire and Cheshire
Cricket League which is now
sponsored by Peak Sports.

The Club’s move, some 200 yards down the road,
has its roots back in 1989 when Club Members realised
the existing Pavilion and facilities were no longer
adequate.
Discussions with regard to improvements were underway
when our then Chairman, I.B.Wild, died very suddenly.
Immediately members expressed the desire to build a
new pavilion in I.B’s memory, however, in order
to obtain funding etc. an extension to the lease was
required and long years of negotiation and fund raising
commenced.
The Landlord ultimately was not willing to sell and
just when consideration to a further long term lease
were being considered a 6 acre site only 200 yards down
Horwich Road was offered to the Club.
In 2003, after various planning applications and appearances
before the High Peak Borough Council Planning Committee,
work commenced on levelling, draining and landscaping
the new site.
The new ground was nurtured by Groundsmen Tony Holden
and Chris Smith throughout 2004 and in 2005 the construction
of the new pavilion commenced.
Thanks to the generosity of sponsors who supplied materials,
the local tradesmen who worked on the site and the members
who gave their time, progress was swift. The external
shell was completed in three months and the internal
fixtures and fittings installed through the winter so
that in April 2006 the new season started “New
Horwich Park” and the grand opening of the I.B.Wild
Memorial Pavilion took place.
Our thanks were expressed to all those who made the
project possible and gave of their time, effort and
monies.
The result of that is that the new permanent Cricket
Ground is in place where lovers of Cricket will forever
be welcome.
We hope that what can be seen at New Horwich Park is
a glimpse of the future and an opportunity for the coming
generations of young cricketers to learn to love the
game.
