Thursday
19th June 2008 Dove Holes, Away (friendly) |
On a cold
and damp evening Whaley U13’s travelled to
Dove Holes for a friendly fixture to replace the
rain curtailed match of two weeks ago. As we arrived
rain began to fall but fortunately is was just a
short passing shower. The match was being hosted
by Dove Holes due to the road closure to our own
ground. We only hope it is passable by Friday, miracles
do sometimes happen.
Ben littler was given the responsibility of captaining
the side on the pitch and his first job was to pick
a batting line up. With a little guidance from his
non playing captain the task was completed and Ben
and Dan Mulholland opened the batting. Whaley made
a disastrous start to the game losing 2 wickets
in the first over without scoring a run and a third
wicket in the second over with the score only on
2. The lively opening bowlers on a damp wicket soon
took their 4th scalp as Nick Schofield was bowled
and the score was now 12 for 4 off 4 overs. Dan
and Alex Cripps then had a good partnership and
took the score to 37 before Alex was caught. Dan
was then joined by Robert Weston who scored freely
with some lovely shots to the boundary, and soon
retired on 33. Meanwhile Dan was still batting very
well at the other and was eventually dismissed for
a fine 21 having held the Whaley innings together
from the first over. Sam Butler scored a creditable
10 including a lofted 6 over cover. Alex Wood 8
not out and Adam Laybourne 1 not out saw the Whaley
innings close on 109 for 7.
After a quick interval lightning struck twice. Ben
Littler taking a wicket with the second ball of
the 1st over and Nick Schofield with the first ball
of his 1st over and Dove were 0 for 2, the same
score as Whaley at this stage of the game. The Dove
Holes recovery never came and with good tight bowling
from all the Whaley players, Dove were in trouble
with 7 for 6 after 10 overs, and at 10 for 8 a swift
end looked on the cards but a spirited 16 not out
from T.Green saw Dove Holes finish on 36 All Out
following a quite magnificent catch by Adam Laybourne
off the bowling of Ben Littler, at backward square
leg. An energetic and positive fielding performance
from the Whaley side was capped off by Henry Holden
as he engineered a superb run out with a direct
hit from 20 yards.
Nick Schofield finished with figures of 2 overs
2 wickets for 0 runs and Robert Weston with figures
of 3 overs 2 wickets for 1 run (which was a wide)
A big thank you to Dove Holes and Geoff Moss in
particular for hosting the game and the sight of
a huge double rainbow.

Sunday
15th June 2008 Buxworth, Home |
At last a fine day for
the U13’s to play a game of cricket, only
the second game of the season due to a few wet
Sundays. Buxworth came the short distance over
the hill and batted first. Whaley started well
and Ben Littler took 2 wickets in his first 2
overs, one of which was caught and bowled. Robert
Weston opened from the other end and bowled a
tidy line and length, without much reward. The
Buxworth batsmen continued to take some risks
with some adventurous shots which paid off in
the end as they ended their innings on 111 for
5. Nick Schofield took a wicket off his bowling
and ended 1 wicket for 11 runs of 4 overs. Dan
Wood took the other wicket after a fine catch
from Alex Minter. The 5th wicket came from a superb
run out engineered by Matt Allison, who had a
busy time in the field. He stopped a well struck
on drive that would no doubt have raced for 4
runs and then returned the ball via the outstretched
hand of Josh Marsh straight onto the stumps.(first
team take note). The fielding was generally good
on what was a fast out field where runs come quickly.
In reply Whaley got off to a great start taking
31 of the first 5 overs, but unfortunately Ben
Littler and Alex Wood were out in quick succession.
Robert Weston went on to top score with 25 and
was caught off the bowling of Lomas. Henry Holden
played the shot of the day with an exquisite cover
drive for four. He went on to make 15 before taking
an over enthusiastic 2nd run and was closely run
out. 2 more run outs ensued, so you may well guess
what the theme will be at training on Friday night.
With the loss of key wickets at crucial times
of the game Whaley didn’t quite get as close
to the Buxworth total as we should and the innings
closed on 79 all out.
Thanks to Craig Prior who as 12th man scored superbly.
It was still good to get a game under our belts,
and a friendly has been arranged this Thursday
to replace one of the rained off games. Hopefully
some more friendly games can be arranged over
the next few weeks.

Sunday
1st June 2008 Dove Holes, Home |
Whaley welcomed
Dove Holes to New Horwich Park for their latest
league fixture. The overnight forecast predicted
ran to arrive just after lunch, but with the Clubs
Annual six a side event scheduled to take place
in the afternoon, we knew the low cloud meant it
was inevitable that it would rain sooner. The game
had only just begun when it started to rain and
at the end of the 5th over with Dove Holes on 21-0
the game was Abandoned. We will try to arrange a
friendly later in the season to replace this fixture.

Sunday 18th May
2008 Chapel, Home
A fine Sunday morning with
blue skies, sunshine and the smell of bacon drifting
across the ground greeted the players to New Horwich
Park.
With the ground looking in first class condition
Chapel took first knock and with some fine bowling
from the Whaley openers, Ben Littler and Robert
Weston, Chapel found themselves in some trouble
at 20 for 3 after the first six overs. Whaley
looked sharp in the field, with plenty of encouragement
and support for the bowlers from all the fielders.
Whaley continued to bowl well and runs proved
hard to come by for the batsmen. Alex wood took
a smart catch behind the wicket from the bowling
of Nick Schofield and a run out brought about
the demise of another chapel batsman. J. Berry
was carried from the pitch retired hurt, after
hurting his leg going for a quick single. The
Chapel innings closed on 69 for 5 following a
good all round team performance in the field,
with everyone playing an important part.
Ben Littler and Robert Weston then opened the
batting and got off to a steady start before Robert
was dismissed for 5. Alex wood soon followed LBW
for 2. Henry Holden and Ben Littler then had a
good partnership with some smart running between
the wicket, before Ben had to retire on 31 not
out. Nick Schofield was soon out and Dan Mulholland
and Henry Holden then took the scores level, when
Henry was out. Josh Marsh and Dan Mulholland then
saw the team home with a bye.
Thanks must also go to Steven Weston who scored
the first half of the game and then fielded for
Chapel in place of the injured J. Berry. His scoring
duties were completed by Charlie Kitchen. (Thanks
Boys)
Well done to the boys for putting all the hard
work in the winter and the last few weeks into
practice, with a well deserved win.

Sunday 4th May
2008 Buxton, Away.
We gathered in a rain sodden
Jodrell car park, with the eager anticipation
that the rain may role back and reveal a nice
sunny warm day. The short drive over long hill
revealed that the rain had set in for the morning
at least, and the wet pitch in Buxton was not
playable. The disappointed troops returned home
to fight another day. Thank you again to the boys
and girls whom attended. We will look forward
to playing this game later in the season.
