25th June 2008 Hayfield, Home. |
Whaley suffered their first defeat of the season
on Wednesday against Hayfield. Dan and Ant opened
the bowling, Morten bowled well from the Tesco end
keeping the runs down. The other end was loose though
boundaries leaked and the Whaley side just didn’t
seem interested. Whaley managed to get their first
break through with a run out by Dec. Morten’s
good bowling though went unrewarded with a couple
of catches going down. Wickets were spread around
even though the bowling wasn’t at its best.
One Hayfield batsman retired with 50, which finished
with Hayfield on 104 runs.
Whaley opened
with Dec and Jake. An early run out opportunity
gave an impression that Hayfield were sensing a
win. Early wickets fell which brought Toby to the
crease. Dec and Toby kept with the run rate and
were on 76 with 6 overs remaining. Toby was then
out for 22 which left Dec and Dan. Then Dec had
to go as he made his 50, annoyance was shown as
Dec wanted to try and see them home. The score was
now on 88 with 3 overs left. Poor running saw Dan
run out which left the tail wagging. Whaley needed
14 from the last over. Jack Steed hit a four off
the first ball and a two off the second. Whaley
still had a glimmer of hope until Jack was caught
and bowled. Whaley now must win their next two games
to win the league. |

Wednesday
11th June 2008 Dove Holes, Home.
Dove opened the batting at Whaley and got off to
a quick start hitting a couple of early boundaries.
Eventually the run rate slowed as the first wickets
fell. Toby and Ant opened the bowling as ordered
by the playing captain Jake Drayson. Dan Morten
replaced Ant at the Chapel end as was tight right
from the start tailing the ball back into the right-hander.
Dan got his reward picking up a few wickets. Luke
came on at the other end and also picked up a couple.
A tight effort in the field saw Dove held back to
just 66 runs. Jake captained the side well for his
first attempt and will hopefully get another shot
at it.
An inspirational
talk to the openers was made by Milly; “Do
it quicker than last week boys!” Dec and Jake
took in the words of the first team keeper and put
his words into action. The two got away quickly
looking solid until Jake was bowled by a low staying
ball. Luke joined Dec at the crease; the two continued
the quick run rate. There was a change of bowling
which proved to be costly as 23 runs came off just
one over. Luke was next to go caught at extra cover
which brought Dan Morten to the crease with Whaley
only needing a few runs for victory. Dec finished
the innings smashing a ball over extra cover for
4. Dec finish unbeaten on 43, Jake got 6, Luke got
9 and Dan got 5. Another fine performance by Whaley.

Wednesday
4th June 2008 Chapel, Home. |
Whaley’s
unbeaten streak continued last Wednesday after the
disappointment of last weeks game being rained off.
Chapel opened the batting against Toby and Ant.
The bowling was tight in the early overs the ball
danced about off the seam and the batsmen struggled
to get it away. Ant’s last over of his spell
saw 3 boundary’s hit. Luke came on in place
of Toby a bowled magnificently getting 6 wickets.
1 bowled, 2 caught by Dec, 2 stumpings and 1 caught
by Dan at backward square-leg. Although Whaley restricted
Chapel to 65 the score doesn’t display the
poor fielding of Whaley.
Whaley opened
with Dec and Slacky. The two started slow struggling
to get the ball off the square. Slacky occasionally
hit the ball over the top for a few runs and was
luckily dropped 4 times. Dec flicked the ball away
and eventually picked up a boundary. But the two
were still only on 30 by the tenth over. The run
rate didn’t speed up until Dec cracked a 6
over the top of mid-off. Chapel’s heads went
down and the two quickly made it to the target with
7 overs to spare. Whaley’s next encounter
is at home where they look to continue their winning
streak.

Wednesday
21st May 2008 Hayfield, Away. |
The
next game on Whaley’s calendar was Hayfield
away.
Hayfield fielded a young side which included a few
U11’s. Whaley opened the batting with Jake
and Dec on what looked a dry cracked pitch, a spinner’s
paradise. Dec got off the mark quickly with a single
through mid-on. Jake got off the mark the over after.
The 3rd over saw the loss of Whaley’s first
wicket as Jake went for 1. This brought Luke to
the crease. The two didn’t waste time as they
took command of the bowlers dispatching them to
all areas of the pitch. Luke hit the ball into the
river twice during his innings and had to ask the
neighbours for the ball back. Meanwhile Dec picked
up his fair share of boundaries. The two looked
unstoppable as they took advantage of Hayfields
young line up. Dec was the first to retire making
50 which brought Dan to the crease. Dan didn’t
mess about he hit a six just a few balls in and
scored a few singles until he held out to deep cover,
a fine innings by Dan who did the job towards the
end of the innings. Luke then retired making his
first half century, hopefully many more to come.
Toby came to the crease and hit a quick fire 31
which boosted Whaley’s total to 159-2.
First over,
first runs that’s what Hayfield talk about
but it was Ant that did the talking dismissing the
opener first ball of the innings. Time wasn’t
on Whaley’s side as the light started to deteriorate
and the threat of rain. Wickets fell often for Whaley
and a sure win was in the bag. Whaley’s resident
leg spinner, Luke came on to bowl. He beat the bat
several times and frustrated the batmen which forced
them to come down the track. Dec mopped up the mess
and whipped the bails off. Luke then did the unthinkable
and got a hat trick with his last wicket just clipping
the bail, true line and length. Jake, Toby, Seth,
Birchy and Welshy mopped up the last wickets for
Whaley. Hayfield were bowled out for 59. Another
convincing win for Whaley.

14th May 2008 Buxworth, Home. |
Whaley’s
next match of the season saw them at home against
Buggy. Buggy opened the batting. Whaley seemed prepared
for the match after an intense fielding warm up.
Ant Rowntree opened the bowling for Whaley and dismissed
the opener for just two runs in the first over.
(2-1). Jake opened from the other end and kept the
runs down with a few boundaries’ hit along
the way. Ant carried on with his great form picking
up three wickets during his five over spell. Jake
also chipped in picking up one wicket. Luke replaced
Ant bowling his leg spin. The dry pitch favoured
the spinner as he ripped the ball from outside leg
to off. On one occasion Luke found the edge but
was dropped by Dec behind the stumps. Dan replaced
Jake and picked up three wickets; unfortunately
Dan bowled a full toss and hit Dec square on the
knee which forced him to stop his wicket keeping
duties. Luke stepped in and kept well while Dec
went down to fine leg. Toby came on towards the
end and kept the runs down picking up one wicket.
Whaley restricted Buggy to 52-8 in their 20 overs,
another good performance in the field.
Dec and Jake
opened the batting for Whaley. They ticked along
slowly with little worry due to the low score. Dec
went early getting a leading edge trying to work
it off his legs which spooned up to mid-on. Jake
went a couple of overs later LBW which looked a
bit harsh as it hit him on the thigh pad. Toby then
joined Luke at the crease. Within a couple of overs
the score went from 25-2 to 45-2 as Luke smashed
the ball around hitting some impressive fours. Luke
finished of the game hitting the winning runs. This
left Toby going the whole game without facing a
ball.
Another Whaley win now 2-0-0.

Wednesday
7th May 2008 Dove Holes, Away. |
The under 15's season got under way with a trip
to Dove Holes. Whaley opened the batting to kick
off the new season with Declan Ryan and Luke Schofield.
After a few dot balls Dec got off the mark pulling
a full toss through square leg for three runs, leaving
Luke to face his first ball of the match. Unfortunately
a couple of balls later Luke was gone for duck,
clean bowled through the gate. Score 3 for 1. Jake
Drayson came to the crease who had shown a lot of
promise during winter training and didn't fail to
impress during his innings. The first boundary of
the game came off the bowling of Chris Poulton as
Dec tucked it away off his legs for 4 runs through
fine leg. Jake and Dec set a healthy partnership
which ticked along nicely. A couple of overs later
Chris Poulton's line started to go as Dec flicked
it off his legs for six over square legs head. Impressive
shots were hit by these two during the innings,
Dec hitting some lovely drives through the on and
off side and Jake flicking the ball of his legs
as if he had been playing for England all his life.
Chris Poulton was replaced by Chris Orrton, Jake
worked him away for a single and left Dec to face
Chris for the first time. Dec edged the first ball
as he struggled to pick out the ball due to Chris's
strange action, luckily for Dec he was dropped by
the keeper. A couple of balls later Dec smashed
one back at Chris inches of the ground and was unbelievably
caught by Chris diving to his left on the follow
through. Dec was dismissed for 22 and now the score
was 37 for 2. Dan Morten was next to arrive at the
crease and pushed the ball to all areas of the field
for 2's and 3's while Jake picked up a couple of
powerfully hit boundary's through the on and off
side. Dan came close to being run out a couple of
times during his innings. He managed to nurdle the
ball down to 3rd man for 4 runs. With 5 overs left
Whaley's run rate had dropped slightly but were
quite confident that they could reach a defendable
score currently 70 for 2. Poulton came back into
the attack and Jake decided to try and go on the
attack. Unfortunately he didn't succeed in this
and was bowled slogging across the line. A fine
innings by Jake making 26. Several runs later Dan
was also gone for 26 which left Toby and Anthony
Rowntree to face the last couple of overs. The pair
bumped the score up to 93 as Ant was deprived of
a 4 as his crunching shot hit the umpire and he
had to settle for 2. Whaley Score- 93-5
Ant and Dan
opened the bowling for Whaley. Ant picked up the
first wicket of the match as he hit the stumps on
the full. The two openers kept the runs down with
some great bowling which found the Dove batters
struggling to get it away. When they did get it
away the bowlers were well backed up be some tight
fielding. Wickets fell quickly as the home side
struggled to fend off Ant's bowling. Dan was replaced
by Sam Slack who struggled with his line and length
on a few balls. Ant was then replaced by the spinner
Luke Schofield who dried up Dove's runs but on the
odd occasion was hit for 4. Four or five overs went
without a wicket until Sam got one to nip back off
the seam and bowled the Dove batter leg stump. Jake
had a bowl, he came close to getting a wicket as
the ball was edged past Dec while he was stood up
to the stumps. The ball went straight and was well
cut off by Toby who threw the ball back into Dec
and whipped the bails off for a run out. Toby came
into the attack and struggled to find his line until
he decided to come around the wicket. During the
closing stages a couple of boundary's came off thick
edges through 3rd man. The inspirational non-playing
captain, Gibbo ,decided to give the new members
of the team a couple of overs. Few runs were conceded
and Jack Steed came close to getting a wicket as
the ball fell short of the out stretched hand of
Dec behind the stumps. Ant came back to close the
innings and mopped up the tail in short time with
catches from Toby and Seth. Ant finished with a
6 fer what saw him return to form. All in all it
was a good effort all-round by Whaley in the field
although there were a couple of tough chances that
went down and a few missed run outs. Final score
Whaley- 93-5 Dove
