Monday 30th June 2008 New Mills, away

Whaley opened the batting with Elliott Simmonds (1) and Declan Ryan (26) against a first team bowling attack and one of the favourites for the league. Elliot was bowled as was Mat Morten (3) despite quick runs being added. Luke Schofield (58) was next up with early jitters before he took command of the New Mills bowling. Dec was Street’s 3 rd bowled victim bringing Jimmy Bradley (14) to the crease for some entertaining hitting. He was eventually bowled which brought Peter Crowley (6) to the crease. Luke and Peter kept the scoreboard ticking over with a sensible partnership and when Peter was out in lthe last over Whaley ended on a creditable 119 for 5.

Tom Cottell and Mat Morten opened the bowling with a very tight spell, so much so the batsman were desperate for runs and a run out ensued with quick thinking from Peter and smart work by Dec. the New Mills batsmen then went for the aerial route spreading the field and taking 2’s in between. The introduction of Peter and Toby Carson couldn’t stop the runs. Even Luke had no answer. Anthony Rowntree had a late breakthrough when an edge was easily caught at first slip by Dan Morten. But New Mills with opener Tom Street 66 not out made it home with 2 overs to spare at 123 for 2

Monday 23rd June 2008 High Lane, away

Whaley opened the batting brightly until Elliott Simmonds (13) holed out to cover. This brought together Declan Ryan (63) and Mat Morten (38) for the decisive partnership of the game, Both hit early 4’s causing the High Lane fielders to spread out allowing the two batsman to play shot after shot running the fielders ragged with 2’s and 3’s. Declan reached his deserved 50 before Mat was caught off a straight drive with the partnership putting on 97 runs in 12 overs. Dec soon followed and the Bowlers then retook the upper hand Jimmy Bradley out for 3, Luke Schofield (7 not out) and Toby Carson (0 not out) in at the end.Whaleys total was 134 for 3.

The track was not as bad as predicted and in the end lead to a very entertaining game. Good fielding early on by Elliott and quick thinking by Lydia Slack got one of the openers run out. Whaley opened the bowling with Tom Cottell (5 overs 2-28) who struggled early on, but through perseverance he got his rewards in his 4th over, tempting the batsman to drive to Elliott at cover who duly caught the chance. Peter Crowley (4 overs 1-17) opened with some very tight bowling at the other end and picked up a wicket in the process, Caught by Jimmy Bradley. TC had another batsman LBW before he finished. Luke Schofield (4 overs 1-22) then came on and caused problems at first tempting High Lane’s big hitter once too often for Declan to take a stumping. Jake Drayson (3 overs 2-18) also bowled well but the High lane middle order had started to increase the run rate, Jake bowled one and Jimmy Bradley got his second catch from a drive that came down with snow on. The final overs were bowled by Mat Morten and Toby Carson, Toby took 2 decisive wickets one bowled and the other LBW before Mat bowled the final batsman as High Lane were all out for 113.

Monday 16th June 2008 Dove Holes, Home

Dove Holes came into bat and appeared confident until they saw Tom Cottell open the bowling with fearsome pace. Although drifting on his line he put the batsman under constant pressure with his 5 overs 2 for 21. In the absence of several key players Jake Drayson opened at the other end and took a wicket in his first over with Elliott taking the catch at cover. Jake bowled 3 overs 1 wicket for 13 runs before Luke Schofield came into bowl. Once he found his line he was unplayable at times resulting with 5 overs 4 wickets for 13 runs including a bowled, caught and bowled, stumping by Declan and another catch for “safe hands Elliott”.

Toby Carson carried on the good straight bowling making it impossible to get him away 4 overs 1 wicket for 7 runs. Mat Schofield then had an over before Samuel Slack replaced Luke and in his second over wrapped up the Dove innings with Mat Schofield taking a catch and Sam bowling his final victim leaving Dove 66 all out.

Declan Ryan and Elliott Simmonds opened the batting and attacked from the start taking 41 runs from the first 5 overs until Declan found a fielder for 30. Jimmy Bradley( 7 not out) came in and pushed the score along . Elliott had played several text book shots all to fielders unfortunately, he then gave the ball some air and was duly caught for 15. Luke Schofield (10 not out) quickly got the runs to give Whaley Victory at 70 for 2.

Thank you to the late call ups which meant we fielded a full 11, all 3 (mat, Luke and Nick) Schofield brothers along with Lydia and Samuel Slack made it a family Whaley Team

Monday 9th June 2008 Buxton, Away

Whaley opened the batting with Elliott Simmonds and Peter Crowley, both with strict instructions one to hit everything and the other to take a quick single. Both batsmen kept to the plan and put on 92 for the first wicket from 15 overs Elliott (73) hit all corners of the ground with some sublime shots and Peter took the singles batting right through for 20 not out. Mat Morten came in to hit a quick fire 19 not out leaving Whaley’s total on 127 -1 after 20 overs.

Buxton were always going to struggle but the opening pair looked solid with the usually reliable Tom Cottel struggling with the hill he eventually changed ends and completed his 5 overs for 24 runs. Peter Crowley (4 overs 1-24) came into the attack but again no break through could be found until the 10th over, with Buxton on 45 when a tactical change of wicket keeper from Luke to Elliott meant Elliot took the catch behind.

The Buxton opener Forder went on to complete his 50 as Luke Schofield (4 overs 3-16) came into the attack and started picking off the Buxton batsmen, assisted by three fine stumpings by Elliott. Despite these wickets falling and a run out courtesy of Peter the runs kept being scored, Jake Drayson ( 2overs 0-17) came on to bowl but was unable to breakthrough.

With 4 overs left and 30 runs needed Mat Morten ( 5 overs 1-20) resumed his attack having made way for TC early on. His second ball bowled the ever dangerous Forder for 61 and from then on the result was safe Toby Carson chipped in with a good run out, Whaley winning comfortably and Buxton finishing on 104 for 6.

Monday 2nd June 2008 Hazel Grove, Home
Whaley record their first win of the season with an emphatic victory over Hazel grove.

With an abundance of players the selection is becoming very difficult in this age group with 15 players vying for the team.

Whaley bowled first with Anthony Rowntree causing problems (3 overs 0-15) and Tom Cottell striking very early then every other over with pace and bounce causing the batsman all sorts of problems (5 overs 3-7). Mat Morten then came into the attack fresh from his weeks break in the Costa Brava, Mat (5 overs 3-5) and TC ripped out the Hazel Grove batting one after the other

Peter Crowley (4 overs 1-4) was introduced and first ball duly bowled another victim Leaving Grove on 28-6 after 13 overs. Whaley looking for the first win of the season went for the kill and Luke Schofield fresh from his first wicket in senior cricket in the 2nd team came on to bowl. His 2 overs 2 wickets for 2 runs just about finished the innings but it was left for Daniel Morten to bowl the last over and as he rightly stated he was the most economical bowler with 1 ball 1 wicket and Grove all out 32.

A change in the usual batting order with Elliott Simmonds (17 not out) and in form Declan Ryan (16 not out) made short work of the 32 runs. Elliot with some uncharacteristic agricultural shots hit 13 off the first over and it was wrapped up in the 4th over with out loss of wicket.

Whaley won by 10 wickets

Monday 19th May 2008 Hayfield, Home

It was a cold May night that Whaley Bridge U17’s met Hayfield at New Horwich Park and this showed through as one of the Hayfield openers was uncharacteristically stiff – scoring few runs before being bowled by an in-form Thomas Cottell, who had a routine catch dropped by wicket-keeper Declan Ryan only a couple of overs earlier. From there on in the Hayfield batsmen scored steadily, but not prolifically – one left handed batsman in particular appeared to have only fine leg as a scoring zone. The slow (ish) pace of scoring must be attributed entirely to the bowlers Drayson, Rowntree, Morten and Crowley who all bowled superbly…if in somewhat differing amounts. Even the fearsome fivesome couldn’t contain all the Hayfield batsmen though and one did indeed reach a half century. He was applauded. Still, at the end of the first innings the Bridge had held “Derbyshire’s Team” to 136.

In reply to this Captain Morten assembled a formidable force of batsmen to chase down what was arguably a less than formidable target. However, the early loss of the Skipper himself - bowled for 0 - may have given the self-titled “cheerleaders” a sense of Déjà vu - the fabled collapse looked imminent.

However, Declan Ryan stepped up to the mark to make amends for his earlier error. Some long overdue runs for Elliot Simmonds (18) helped out but eventually he fell to an unexpected bouncer– caught behind off the glove. The emergence of Luke Schofield (30…odd*) spurred Whaley on and together he and Ryan compiled a rarely seen hundred for the home team, Ryan passing 50 for the first time on his way to a beautifully crafted 63*. Yet again the middle order pairing of Ryan and Schofield seemed to be doing the business for the home side but doing business at the speed required by then needs a large factory and multiple office juniors and even with the help of the U15’s Whaley ultimately fell 16 runs short of an historic victory.

Clearly a batsmen’s game with few wickets being taken, but good signs nonetheless for Whaley – a win this season looks (almost) definite!

Monday 19th May 2008 Hayfield, Home

A much anticipated visit from the reigning under 17 champions gave Whaley another close finish.
Hayfield batted first and tight opening bowling from Tom Cottell (5 overs 1-21) and Matt Morten kept the batsman at bay until Hudson was bowled by a ferocious ball by TC which broke the bail.
Unfortunately the Hayfield batsman stayed in command and Davies made a creditable 86 not out. The Whaley fielders kept to there task with the fielding improving Jimmy Bradley stopping several fours. Other bowlers used were Anthony Rowntree, Peter Crowley and Jake Drayson all of them bowled well with Morten coming back at the end but no further wickets fell leaving the Hayfield total on 136 for 1.

Whaley Opened the batting with Elliott Simmonds (18) showing some of last years form by cracking several fine boundaries, Morten at the other end was soon bowled which brought man of the match Declan Ryan to the wicket. Elliott was out soon after allowing Luke Schofield to bat. Luke and Declan then took on the run chase with 10 an over needed, Dec hitting all parts of the ground with a cultured career best 63 not out and Luke 30 not out, they took the total to touching distance, but not quite enough for a win in front of a large appreciative crowd Whaley finished on 119 for 2.

Thursday 15th May 2008 Buxworth, Home. (cup game)

Matt Morten the Whaley captain won the toss and invited Buxworth to bat. The two Buxworth openers set off in a rush scoring 33 off the first 4 overs. The Whaley opening bowlers Mat Morten and Tom Cottell had to perform to the best of their ability to restrict Buggy to 44 from the first 8 overs with TC picking up 2 wickets. Next up was Peter Crowley and Toby Carson who maintained the accurate bowling only to see some poor fielding allowing the visitors to keep the score board ticking over. In Peter’s final over Buxworth’s danger man Joe Hall (39) swash buckled once too often giving Elliott Simmonds the chance to show off his speed and guile adapted from hours in the gym to take a running catch. With Buxworths team now reduced to youngsters it didn’t take long for Whaley’s final two bowlers of Dan Morten (2-14) and Jake Drayson (4-6) to clear up the Buxworth tail. This included a second hat trick in the week this time Jake Drayson took the honour in the final over leaving Buxworth on 103 all out

Whaley’s innings got off to a disastrous start with Elliott losing his wicket in the second over with the score on 1. Declan Ryan came to the crease to partner Mat Morten and both found runs difficult to come by. Declan (5) was soon out and the score was still well short of the run rate. Luke Schofield (2) soon followed which brought Toby to the wicket. Mat Morten (39) then took command of the bowling before holing out in the deep. Toby Carson (23 not out) and TC (4) tried to up the run rate and with 4 overs to go 20 runs were needed. Peter (10 not out) came to the wicket but Boundaries could not be found and Whaley’s innings finished on 98 for 5, 5 runs short giving Buxworth victory.

Monday 12th May 2008 Mellor, Away.

So much for a 6pm start when the home team didn’t turn up until 6.30pm.
After last weeks wash out the players were always going to be a bit rusty and so it proved. Whaley started with some good shots, but lack of concentration against good bowling cost early wickets. Elliott Simmonds first to go on 3, followed by Mat Morten on 6. Declan Ryan and Luke Schofield then steadied the batting both looking in good form until Declan was bowled by a good ball for 9. Luke then held the innings together staying until the last ball with a total of 37 despite losing Peter Crowley for 7.Jake Drayson was not out 5. Whaley finished on 80 for 6.

The opening bowling of Whaley then gave an impressive performance Anthony Rowntree taking an early wicket and finishing his 5 overs 2 for 26. Matt Morten at the other end bulldozed his way through the Mellor batsmen taking 4-18 from his 5 overs including a fifth over hat trick with all 4 being clean bowled. The introduction of Peter and Daniel Morten kept up the good work but the wickets dried up and Mellor made it home for victory with the loss of just one more wicket.
